The Institute’s researchers participated in the annual meeting of the Horizon Europe project entitled PROMISEANG ‘Alternative PROteins from MIcrobial fermentation of non-conventional SEA sources for Next-Generation food, feed and non-food bio-based applications’, which is implemented also by the Institute of Agricultural and Food Biotechnology.

The meeting was held in Lisbon at the headquarters of the Instituto Superior Técnico, one of the project partners. The PROMISEANG consortium consists of 11 partners from: Spain, Portugal, Germany, Polish and Spain. UNIVERSIDAD DE VIGO from Spain is the coordinator of the project.

PROMISEANG is a 48-month project that aims to develop novel alternative proteins from marine underexploited sources (marine invertebrate and macroalgae discards and industrial biowastes) through biomass fermentation (solid-state and submerge processes), generating new microbial protein biomass, meeting market requirements for food, feed, and non-food (biomedicine, pharma and cosmetic) bio-based applications.

The Institute of Agricultural and Food Biotechnology is coordinating Work Package 4 on ‘Characterization and safety approval of the alternative protein extracts for final applications’ and is carrying out research within other Work Packages.
